Some people get very touchy when films romanticize criminals, but given the wild success of many of these biopics, it's safe to say people do enjoy a great portrayal of outlaws. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and scored seven of them, including Best Picture and Best Director. It's a wonderful movie with a grandstanding scale, fantastic cinematography, and many nuances from O'Toole, who portrays Lawrence with all his known traits while injecting some humanity into his actions. The main story follows Temujin stealing a girl from a rival clan. The film's plot is nothing out of the ordinary, mostly focused on a contrived love story instead of exploring the significant conquests of the divisive historical figure. The movie was directed by Dick Powell and written by Oscar Millard the biopic features the talents of John Wayne, Susan Hayward, and Pedro Armendáriz.Īlthough The Conqueror is not exactly the worst movie ever made by Wayne, there's no way to oversee the dumbfounding decision to cast him in the lead role. However, The Conqueror is not precisely controversial for its depiction of the ancient Asian warrior but for its casting choices. The Mongol conqueror is a divisive figure known for being an unforgiving, relentless warrior who spared very few in his quest for conquest. Making a film about Genghis Khan will always be controversial.
